To attain the Taj Mahal in Agra, you have countless handy preferences relying on your beginning point. Since it is one of India’s most visited sites, the connectivity is excellent.
1. By Train (Recommended)
This is generally the fastest and most comfortable way to travel, especially from Delhi.
- Agra Cantt (AGC): The main station where most high-speed trains like the Gatimaan Express (1 hour 40 mins from Delhi) and Shatabdi Express arrive.
- Agra Fort (AF): This station is actually closer to the Taj Mahal (about 3 km) and is convenient if you are coming from Jaipur or eastern cities like Kolkata.
- Local Transport: From either station, you can easily find pre-paid taxis, Uber/Ola, or auto-rickshaws to take you to the monument.
2. By Road
Agra is well-connected to major cities via modern expressways.
- From Delhi: Use the Yamuna Expressway. It is a smooth 3–4 hour drive. You can take a private taxi or an AC Volvo bus from the ISBT Sarai Kale Khan or Anand Vihar terminals.
- From Jaipur: It takes about 4–5 hours via the NH21.
- From Lucknow: The Agra-Lucknow Expressway has reduced travel time to around 4 hours.
3. By Air
- Agra Airport (Kheria): Primarily a military base with limited commercial flights.
- Delhi Airport (IGI): Most international and domestic travelers fly into Delhi and then take a train or taxi to Agra, as it offers the most frequent connections.
Key Tips for Your Visit:
- Closed on Fridays: The Taj Mahal is closed to the general public every Friday. Plan your trip for any other day of the week.
- Ticketing: It is highly recommended to book your tickets online in advance via the official Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) website to avoid long queues.
- Pollution Zone: To protect the marble, no fuel-driven vehicles are allowed within 500 meters of the Taj Mahal. You will need to walk or take an electric rickshaw (e-rickshaw) or a battery-operated bus for the final stretch.
