Reaching Kedarnath Temple in 2026 entails a multi-stage ride via the Himalayas. Since the temple is opening today, April 22, 2026, the yatra is officially active.

Phase 1: Reach the Base Camp (Sonprayag/Gaurikund)

You must first reach the last motorable point by air, rail, or road.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun), about 225 km from the base. From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus.
  • By Train: The nearest major railway station is Haridwar Junction (205 km away). Rishikesh is closer but has fewer long-distance train options.
  • By Road: You can take a bus or taxi from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun.
    • Route: Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Guptkashi → Sonprayag.
    • Final Vehicle Stretch: Private vehicles are parked at Sonprayag. From there, shared local jeeps take you the final 6 km to Gaurikund, where the trek begins.

Phase 2: The Final Ascent (Gaurikund to Temple)

From Gaurikund, you have three main ways to reach the temple (approx. 16–18 km):

  1. Trekking on Foot: A steep uphill climb that takes 6–10 hours depending on fitness. The path is well-paved with rest stops at Bheembali and Linchauli.
  2. Pony, Mule, or Palanquin (Dandi/Kandi): Available at Gaurikund. Prices are fixed by the local administration (typically ₹3,000 – ₹8,000 depending on the service).
  3. Helicopter: The fastest option (8–10 minute flight).

Mandatory 2026 Requirements.

  • Biometric Registration: You cannot visit without a Yatra Registration Pass. Register for free at the Uttarakhand Tourist Care website or via the “Tourist Care Uttarakhand” app.
  • QR Code: Carry a printed or digital copy of your QR-coded registration pass; it will be scanned at checkpoints in Sonprayag and the helipads.
  • Medical Check: Due to the high altitude (3,583m), it is highly recommended (and sometimes required for those over 50) to get a fitness check at the medical camps in Sonprayag.

Travel Tips.

Since you are visiting in late April, it will still be very cold, especially at night. Ensure you carry heavy woolens, thermals, and a high-quality raincoat or poncho, as mountain weather changes rapidly.
