Manali is nestled in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh and, while it does not have its own airport or broad-gauge railway station, it is well-connected through various transit hubs in North India.

Traveling by Air (Fastest Mode)

1. Kullu Manali Airport in Bhuntar is the closest airport, located about 50 km (1.5 hours) from Manali.

  • Flights primarily connect here from Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi and Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Chandigarh.
  • Upon landing, you can hire a prepaid taxi to reach Manali.
  • Note that flights to Bhuntar can be expensive and are occasionally canceled due to mountain weather; many travelers prefer flying to Chandigarh or Delhi and then driving.

Traveling By Train (Scenic & Budget-Friendly)

There is no direct broad-gauge train to Manali. You will need to disembark at a nearby hub and complete the journey by road.

  • Chandigarh Railway Station: The most popular choice for travelers from South or West India. From here, it is a 310 km (8–10 hour) drive or bus ride to Manali.
  • Joginder Nagar Railway Station: The absolute nearest station (approx. 145 km away), though it is on a narrow-gauge line with limited connectivity, mostly serving local passenger trains from Pathankot.
  • Ambala Cantt Junction: Another major junction well-connected to most Indian cities, located about 340 km from Manali.

Traveling by Road (Most Popular)

Most travelers reach Manali via a road trip from Delhi or Chandigarh, as the route offers spectacular views of the Beas River and lush valleys.

  • By Bus: State-run (HRTC) and private Volvo/Mercedes buses operate overnight from Kashmere Gate ISBT in Delhi (approx. 12–14 hours) and Chandigarh (approx. 8–10 hours).
  • By Car/Taxi: You can hire a private cab from Chandigarh or Delhi. The drive through the Atal Tunnel is a highlight, connecting Manali to the Lahaul Valley.
  • Self-Drive: The roads are well-maintained but winding; it is recommended to have experience with mountain driving, especially during the winter months when snow can be a factor.
